“All we see are their abilities”
Aaron's Acres is a non-profit 501c3 organization that serves children between the ages of 5 and 21 with special needs. Aaron's Acres provides programs to over 200 families in Lancaster, Berks and Dauphin Counties. Our programs focus on socialization and communication by providing therapeutically based recreational activities. Our goal is to truly replicate the social and recreational activities experienced during childhood for ALL participants regardless of their abilities. No child is ever turned away from Aaron's Acres.
Although Aaron's Acres works with children ages 5-21, Millersville University specifically works with the Lancaster County School Age program with children ages 5-12. The program consists of a 2 1/2 hour session held once a month on Sunday afternoons. Each session consists of a structured program in which the children can participate in crafts, music therapy, group games, story time and preparing a snack. Siblings ages 5-12 are also invited to participate in separate activities with other siblings and meet children who are in similar situations while having fun. The school year program is supervised by professional social workers and special education teachers. Other staff members include undergraduate students who are studying special education, social work, psychology and occupational therapy who want to gain experience with working with children who have special needs.
300 and 400 Level Millersville University Interns facilitate in the success of each Sunday Event. 300 Level Interns prepare all materials for each session as well as work one on one with an assigned child. 400 Level Interns plan activities for each session as well as write grants to support the Aaron's Acres . For more information on how you can get involved with Aaron's Acres, please see the specific 300 and 400 level pages as well as fill out a contact form.
